Postpartum Support

Bringing a new baby home is one of life’s most special moments.  It can also be a time of uncertainty and exhaustion as you try to recover from giving birth, process your birth experience and learn how to care for your new baby.  You may have given birth to multiples, or be healing from a cesarean.  Maybe your partner is unable to take parental leave or is busy caring for older children.  You may not have any family in the area, or you simply may be feeling overwhelmed.  There are so many reasons why it makes sense to hire a postpartum doula to help you through the fourth trimester.

As a postpartum doula, Halley can help you take a nap or a shower, look after older children while you bond with the baby, tidy up your house, or prepare a simple, nourishing meal.  She can address any concerns you may have with newborn care and teach you how to use that funky sling you received at your baby shower.  She can help you and the baby get off to a good start with breastfeeding, help you learn how to use a breast pump, or help you start bottle feeding.  She can run errands for you, or get you and baby ready for a first outing.  As a postpartum doula, Halley’s goal is for you and your family to feel calm, rested, confident and upbeat after her visit.

Postpartum visits are usually between two and four hours long, as this is an optimal amount of time to check in with you and the baby, get some things done around the house and ensure that you get a chance to rest, eat or shower.  Some popular times for postpartum care include:

  • Early morning – to allow you to rest after a challenging night.
  • Midday – to ensure that you can shower and eat a nourishing lunch.
  • Late afternoon/early evening  (the so-called witching hour!) – when your baby may be a little fussier, older children may require care and an extra pair of hands comes in handy.
  • Overnights  – a great way for you and your partner to get some rest.

You may feel you need postpartum care immediately after coming home from the hospital.  You may want the support a few weeks later when your partner has to go back to work and visiting family and friends have gone home. Or, you may need some help as you prepare to transition back to work.  Halley will work with you to customize a package that suits your family’s individual needs.
